Cycling

To talk about cycling in Orihuela is to talk about Bernardo Ruiz, one of the great pioneers of this sport in Spain. Four times champion of Spain, winner of La Vuelta a España in 1948, third in the Tour de France in 1952 and champion of La Vuelta a Levante in 1954. On January 8 he turned 100 years old.

Economy

Orihuela has traditionally been an agricultural town. Especially irrigated crops such as oranges and lemons. Over time it has evolved to an economy more focused on the service sector and tourism is nowadays the main engine of Orihuela’s economy.

Culture

The historic center of the city was declared a Historic-Artistic Monumental Site (BIC) in 1969, one of the first to be declared in Spain. Historic buildings, churches, palaces and even part of the original wall that protected the city make up this historic center.

Sport

The centenary of Bernardo Ruiz marks the 2025 sporting year in Orihuela, a town that is a cradle of sportsmen and women. Without going any further, this past summer was represented at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. Paula Soria from Orihuela, paired with veteran Liliana Fernández from Alicante, reached the round of 16 thanks to a great performance in the Parisian capital.

Gastronomy

Orihuela’s cuisine is made with products from its fertile orchard. Typical of these lands are cocido con pelotas, turkey stew, paella huertana, stewed beans and the most typical dish of the area: rice and crust.
